כל עיר שגגותיה גבוהים מבית הכנסת לסוף נחרב. פירוש, האדם שיש לו גדלות וגבהות, והעושה כזה, כביכול שעושה את עצמו גבוה מהשכינה, כמ"ש אין אלקים כל מזימותיו, ואומרים מי אדו"ן לנו. והשכינה נקראת אדנ"י, ונקראת ג"כ בית הכנסת. וזהו גבוה מבית הכנסת, לסוף נחרב אדם זה (1ואפשר לומר תיבת נחר"ב רומזת נ' חר"ב, ר"ל מזה הנזכר הנקרא נ' ונקרא חר"ב נוקמת נקם ברית. כי מזאת המדה [עצמה] באה לו החרב והחורבן, כמו שכתוב והארץ מתקוממת לו.)
