בערב יום הכיפורים מנהג לשחוט תרנגול לבן הנקרא גבר ושוחטים אותו באשמורת הבוקר אחר סליחות כי אז חוט של חסד גובר בעולם ואנו שוחטין אותו להכניע הגבורות ומוציאין ממנו דמו כדי להמתיקו ונקרא כפרה כמו שעיר המשתלח. ויהיו הכפרות כפי חשבון בני אדם שבבית זכר לזכר נקבה לנקבה ולמעוברת שוחט ג' אחת בשבילה וזכר ונקבה בשביל ספק הולד:

מלקות ילקו קודם טבילה ומנחה:
